This municipality is located in the central part of the country. Manatuto is also known as birth place of Xanana Gusmao, a national hero of the Resistance, who became the second President in 2002 (the first president of Timor-Leste was Francisco Xavier in 1975). The part of the municipality situated on the north coast is very well-known place for snorkelling and scuba diving, particularly around the village of Behau and “One Dollar” Beach, with its extensive, healthy coral reef, clear, sparking water and white sand.
CBET restaurants at Behau and Obrato are very famous for their local grilled fresh fish, which are popular with travellers making the journey to Baucau and Lautem Municipality, a welcome road-trip stopover for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
